Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence of a particular Jury member. Due to her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
