Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez who was hairdresser. As a
child, she was an obsessive performer who would recreate commercials on
television for the enjoyment of her family. However, she chose to concentrate
on dance. After nine years of ballet classes in Spain's National Conservatory
she was able to continue her studies under the direction of several prominent
dancers. She realized her passion at the age of 15 when she defeated more than
300 girls at an audition for a talent agency. The contract that resulted in her
being signed secured her roles in a variety of Spanish television shows as well
as music videos. This in turn led to a future career on the screen. Cruz made
her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). She then
briefly was in Framed (1992) in a Timothy Dalton thriller. The third film she
starred in, Belle Epoque (1992) was an Oscar-winning movie in which she was one
of four sisters who were competing to win the love of an attractive deserter
army soldier. The film received numerous Goyas, Spanish equivalent of Academy
Awards. Cruz became a prominent Spanish actor with her three to four films per
year that she added to her resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her
the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would
later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead
actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge
hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her luck changed
dramatically in 1998 when her movie-industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998)
was awarded the Best Actress Goya. After several more attempts at film in the
English language Cruz's first international breakthrough was Almodovar’s All
About My Mother (1999), where she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun. Cruz
found herself very popular on both sides of the Atlantic due to her film
winning numerous awards and accolades. Woman on Top (2000) was her next major
project. The film was an American comedy about a cook with exceptional culinary
talents and extremely motion sickness. While she was in America,
